Restoring the Village Health Centre for Women and Mothers

Honoring a legacy of care. Expanding a vision of hope.

The Village Health Centre stands as a testament to the compassion and determination of the late Kellen Wangui, mother of AYHEM’s founder, Dr. Peninah Njeri Kaniu.
A devoted midwife, Kellen served the women of her community long before a formal clinic existed. In the absence of proper facilities, she converted her family’s small food storage unit into a safe space where women could labor and give birth with dignity and care.

Recognizing the urgent need for better maternal health services, she petitioned the Kenyan government to establish a proper clinic for the women of Kagaa. Her advocacy succeeded, and the village was finally granted a clean, dedicated space for childbirth and maternal care.

Now, AYHEM is continuing and expanding her vision by remodeling and equipping the Village Health Centre to meet modern standards of safety, comfort, and holistic care. The revitalized facility will include:

  • A clean, modern birthing suite with updated medical equipment

  • Postpartum and neonatal recovery areas

  • Training programs for community birth attendants and health education workshops

This effort is being realized in collaboration with Her Holistic Womb to integrate holistic postpartum care, spiritual support, and maternal wellness education. Together, we are restoring a legacy of love — creating a space where every woman can give birth with dignity, safety, and hope.

This shed once served as the only birthing space for women in Kagaa — cleared and prepared by midwife Kellen Wangui, whose dream of a proper clinic continues to guide our mission today.

This Village Health Centre was built from Kellen Wangui’s vision — a safe space for mothers to give birth, sustained by clean water and the enduring hope she brought to her community.

Kagaa Senior High School Computer Lab

Empowering youth through technology and education.

Building on our 2019 library initiative, AYHEM is now developing a fully equipped computer lab at Kagaa Senior High School in Kiambaa County, Kenya.

The lab will serve as a vital learning hub for students and community members by providing:

  • Computer literacy and digital skills training

  • Access to online educational resources and research tools

  • Opportunities for entrepreneurship, coding, and innovation

Through partnerships with technology companies, universities, and global supporters, the Kagaa Computer Lab will bridge the digital divide and create pathways for youth to thrive in the global economy.
